Hong Kong Derby Form Guide & Tips

1. California Spangle ($4.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

We had California Spangle winning last time out and it was a good victory. However, he had a soft run in front and only just held on.

Running over the longer distance could be a worry, but he goes into the mix as a trifecta chance.

2. Romantic Warrior (Best Bet – $3.75) Bet @ Sportsbet

He didn’t have all favours in the Classic Cup but he looks better suited to running over this distance.

He got the better of California Spangle two back and anything close to that effort sees him winning the Derby.

Punters get odds worth snapping up.

3. The Irishman ($6.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

The former New Zealander hasn’t been too far behind them and he has been set for this race all along.

We’re unsure if he’s good enough to back confidently, but we wouldn’t be leaving him out of calculations for multiples.

4. Turin Redsun (Best Each Way – $5) Bet @ Sportsbet

Chased hard in the Classic Cup and we’re not surprised by the betting moves for the third favourite.

He looks ready to run another big race and the $5 is a fair price, so punters should expect a top effort.

5. Ima Single Man ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

Never too far away from the prize, but given the quality of this field, we couldn’t find room for him in our selections.

Drawn well but he would need to find a length to figure in the finish.

6. Senor Toba ($5.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

Scored a quality win two back before finishing fifth behind California Spangle. Nothing wrong with that run and he’s another first four chance.

Late betting moves could be interesting with Joao Moreira riding.

7. Fa Fa ($34) Bet @ Sportsbet

He showed ability early on when winning five on the bounce at Happy Valley, but his two runs at Sha Tin have been awful.

He’ll continue to struggle running in this company.

8. Money Catcher ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

That was a much better run for third last start and the rise in distance helps. He could be the forgotten runner in the field, so include for value.

9. Rocket Spade (Best Roughie – $21) Bet @ Sportsbet

The Kiwi runner hasn’t shown his best form since arriving in Hong Kong but we’re sticking with him for another run.

The son of Fastnet Rock won the New Zealand Derby, so that form has to be considered.

10. S J Tourbillon ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

He hasn’t been running well enough and the triple-figure odds reflect his chances of winning.

11. Champion Dragon ($34) Bet @ Sportsbet

Champion Dragon got back to his best with a narrow win at Sha Tin but it came in grades much easier than this.

It should give him confidence, but we’re not prepared to include him.

12. Mr Ascendency ($67) Bet @ Sportsbet

Not running well enough this season to consider. He is talented at best but his confidence levels have dipped.

13. Crossford ($101) Bet @ Sportsbet

A two-time winner from his last five starts, but those wins came in lower grades. As the odds suggest, he’ll need to improve to figure in the finish.

14. Nordic Sky ($101) Bet @ Sportsbet

Another runner at big odds and rightfully so. He hasn’t been showing nearly enough to test this field and his odds should drift.

15. Boom Alliance ($51) Bet @ Sportsbet

Second behind Champion Dragon last start but that form doesn’t look like a good guide for this race.

Only a one-race winner who should struggle to keep up.

16. Copartner Elites ($101) Bet @ Sportsbet

Big odds available and it’s just making up numbers.
