Newmarket Handicap Form Guide & Tips

1. Masked Crusader ($12) Bet @ Sportsbet

Masked Crusader is a talented sprinter but we expected better at Flemington last time out.

We’re not sure where to place him down the straight and he might need a corner to show his best. First four chance.

2. Home Affairs (Best Bet – $3.70) Bet @ Sportsbet

He dug deep to beat Nature Strip last start and that form should be the testing material.

He’s an exciting three-year-old colt who will be heading to the breeding barn, so winning the Newmarket would be huge.

3. Lost and Running (Best Each Way – $3.80) Bet @ Sportsbet

Living up to his potential this season with back-to-back victories. The latest was impressive and he’s hot on the heels of favouritism.

Punters still get each-way odds and he should be putting in the big bounds late as he tries to chase down Home Affairs.

4. Zoutori ($41) Bet @ Sportsbet

We have fallen out of favour with Zoutori, who is a five-time winner at Flemington, but he’s past his best.

5. Count de Rupee ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

He is a smart type and he owns four wins from five starts at the distance, but we don’t think he’s up to Group 1 level just yet.

He’s using this race to work his way up to the mile.

6. Levante ($23) Bet @ Sportsbet

The Kiwi sprinter is a real talent, but she’s also a small mare who could be knocked around in the straight.

Her turn-of-foot is explosive on its day, so keep her safe in first four markets.

7. Halvorsen ($46) Bet @ Sportsbet

Halvorsen has five wins on the track and he showed fight when winning here last time out.

The six-year-old meets a much harder field here, and for that reason, we can’t include him in selections.

8. Oxley Road ($19) Bet @ Sportsbet

Punters get a fair price for Oxley Road, who chased gamely behind Marabi last time out.

There is more depth to this field, but he should loom up down the outside at some point and run close to the money.

Include at the price.

9. Poland ($91) Bet @ Sportsbet

He has very little chance of keeping up with the pace. Wait until he rises in distance.

10. Quantico (Best Roughie – $16) Bet @ Sportsbet

Quantico has missed a few runs because of the track, but he’s a serious thoroughbred and the stable shares that opinion.

He owns three consecutive wins, and with only 52.5kg on his back, he’ll be a dangerous type here. $16 is a value price.

11. Roch ‘n’ Horse ($61) Bet @ Sportsbet

The Kiwi ran a nose behind Levante last start, but we can’t see her finishing in the money.

She is a nice type on her day but sprinting in Australia is a different kettle of fish.

12. September Run ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

Punters have had a hard time betting on September Run, but we’re including her in first four selections.

She has blown out to a backable price and she is a runner worth sticking with.

13. Snapdancer ($16) Bet @ Sportsbet

She is rising in class but her last two wins have been impressive. She defeated a nice type by 2.8 lengths last start, so the class is there.

We wouldn’t be surprised if she hugged the outside rail and was there in the finish.

14. Swats That ($15) Bet @ Sportsbet

Her lack of recent winning form is a concern and she’s unders. Yet to win at Flemington, we’ll pass on the $15.

15. The Astrologist ($67) Bet @ Sportsbet

His track statistics read well but they’re not coming in the Newmarket Handicap.

We’d be surprised if he finished close enough to the placings.

16. Artorius ($11) Bet @ Sportsbet

Artorius has a devastating turn-of-foot on his day and he just needs things to go his way.

Drawing barrier two down the straight isn’t ideal, but if they split, he could lead the inside division.

17. Finance Tycoon ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

Dangerous at the weights, but because there are so many winning chances, we’re happy to leave out the colt.
