Friday 18/02/22

7:45pm Waratahs vs Drua @ CommBank Stadium

We think both teams could be in for an awfully long season. The Waratahs were dreadful during the Australian Super Rugby competition and the Drua will need time.

It’s always hard to weigh up how new teams will play, but the Drua will be full of energy and they could test the Waratahs.

Starting well and putting them under pressure will be the key, so if they can hold onto the ball and force the Waratahs to defend, the home team could get very tired.

Bookmakers have the line at 9.5 in favor of the Waratahs, but pick the Drua to keep this one close.

Betting tip: Fiji Drua +9.5 @ $1.97 – Bet @ Sportsbet

2:35pm Chiefs vs Highlanders @ Wakatipu Rugby Club

Expectations are high for the Chiefs and they could start their season off with a win.

They looked excellent in pre-season games and it often takes the Highlanders a few games to hit their straps.

That’s reflected in betting markets with the Chiefs firm at $1.30. However, the line is a favourable one for Chiefs’ backers. The –6.5 means they can score by a converted try and cover the line, so we’re locking it in.

Having home ground advantage is another positive for the Chiefs.

Betting tip: Chiefs –6.5 @ $1.94 – Bet @ Sportsbet

5:05pm Crusaders vs Hurricanes @ Forsyth Barr Stadium

The Crusaders vs Hurricanes is set to be the most exciting game of the opening round and it should be an offensive masterclass.

Both teams have stunning back lines, so we should see some running rugby under the roof in Dunedin. It’s a neutral venue, so it won’t help either team.

The Hurricanes could threaten for the title if they put it all together, so getting +8.5 points in the opening game is a value line.

We expect the Crusaders to show some rust early on, so they might not be at their best. Therefore, take the Hurricanes to cover the line and potentially have a chance to win at the death.

Betting tip: Hurricanes +8.5 @ $1.87 – Bet @ Sportsbet

7:45pm Reds vs Rebels @ Suncorp Stadium

We think the Reds are an excellent chance to play well this season and that’s bad news for the Rebels.

They have a team good enough to go all the way and they often get off to a good start, which is why bookmakers have a sizable line for the Round 1 fixture.

The Rebels are always there abouts, but consistency is problematic. It could be a long season for the Melbourne-based team, and given this game is played at Suncorp, the Reds should win.

Bookmakers have the line at –10.5, so it’s sizable, but that shouldn’t deter punters from climbing into the Reds.

Betting tip: Reds –10.5 @ $1.91 – Bet @ Sportsbet

2:00pm Brumbies vs Force @ GIO Stadium

There has been very little betting support for the Force and they could be languishing near the bottom of the ladder.

The same can’t be said for the Brumbies, who are close to having a breakout year. They have the makings of a good team and the proof will be in the pudding on Sunday.

Given the ideal playing conditions in Canberra, we expect some running rugby and we expect the Brumbies to come out humming.

Betting tip: Brumbies –10.5 @ $1.91 – Bet @ Sportsbet
