Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips

1. Hitotsu ($3.60) Bet @ Neds

Hitotsu was terrific in his comeback performance at Flemington, which followed up his Victorian Derby win.

He is a class act, but his odds are drifting and it could have something to do with the track. He’s going in trifecta calculations, but watch the betting.

2. Alegron ($16) Bet @ Neds

His efforts this preparation have been poor and we’re not sure if he’s good enough to turn that form around.

Having Hugh Bowman in the saddle helps, but we would want longer odds.

3. Forgot You (Best Each Way – $7.50) Bet @ Neds

The colt by Savabeel has been working towards the Australian Derby and he’s bred to see out the distance.

He comes off a third behind Anamoe, and although a long way from the winner, it was a run used for this race.

Include him at the each-way odds.

4. Castlereagh Kid ($16) Bet @ Neds

He will roll forward and try to dominate the race, but he could be putting in small strides close to the line in these conditions.

Look for him in something easier.

5. Regal Lion (Best Bet – $5.50) Bet @ Neds

The Kiwis have an excellent record in the Derby and he had the flashing light on after flashing home on Monday.

He stormed home for second and the Kiwis love the wet conditions, so despite finishing only third in the New Zealand Derby, he is the one they all have to beat.

6. White Noise ($31) Bet @ Neds

Another Kiwi runner from the Baker/Forsman stable. He finished seventh at Newcastle, but was making enough ground near the line.

Drawing barrier 21 won’t make a difference over this distance, so he could enter first four calculations.

7. War Eternal ($23) Bet @ Neds

War Eternal is a past winner at Randwick, which helps. However, we think he needs to lift a touch to win the Derby.

We’re prepared to leave him out.

8. Character ($10) Bet @ Neds

Character won on Monday at Newcastle when beating Regal Lion. It was a strong effort, but the rise in distance might not help.

The son of Teofilo is already a two-time winner this preparation, so he’s not being left out, but a win would surprise.

9. Can’t Go Wong (Best Roughie – $23) Bet @ Neds

Can’t Go Wong finished second at Moonee Valley last start and we think he has more upside than most here.

The Kiwi-bred son of Per Incanto should relish the wetter track and there has been solid betting support at a price.

Take the $23 before it shortens.

10. Maurice’s Medad ($41) Bet @ Neds

He hasn’t done enough this preparation to warrant attention. Drawing wide doesn’t help and we can’t have him in the mix.

11. Raging Bull ($35) Bet @ Neds

Showed ability earlier on but we think he’ll struggle against this level of opposition.

12. Elzamee ($31) Bet @ Neds

A winner on debut, and although he was solid at The Valley last start, he would need to find a few lengths.

A late betting push would be the only reason to include him.

13. Zoumon ($51) Bet @ Neds

Tried to lead throughout on Monday but faltered late. A repeat could be on the cards.

14. Clyde ($81) Bet @ Neds

His form is too mixed to warrant attention. Wait until he races in something much easier.

15. Benaud ($16) Bet @ Neds

Benaud has been well-backed at odds following a fourth at Newcastle. It was a solid effort and there is some confidence in betting markets.

16. Footlights ($61) Bet @ Neds

A last-start winner but he would need to lift. That win came at Ballarat against much easier opposition.

17. Sea Treasures ($67) Bet @ Neds

A last-star winner at Newcastle and he’s bred to handle the distance, but we can’t have him in our selections.

18. Akahata ($126) Bet @ Neds

Nothing running well enough his last two to be considered.

19. Asternishing ($251) Bet @ Neds

Unlikely to run and he has little chance either way.

20. Mediaro ($61) Bet @ Neds

A better chance than some of these, but we can’t see him figuring in the finish if he gets a run.

21. Lukey Luke ($81) Bet @ Neds

Shouldn’t be getting a run off the ballot.
