Hong Kong Classic Cup Form Guide & Tips

1. California Spangle (Best Each Way – $4.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

California Spangle owns five wins and two placings from seven starts, so that form makes him tough to beat.

He was beaten a half-length by Romantic Warrior in the Classic Mile, but he’s good enough to turn that result around.

Punters get each-way odds and they should be taken.

2. Romantic Warrior (Best Bet – $3.25) Bet @ Sportsbet

The class runner of the field after winning all five career starts, including the Classic Mile against similar opposition.

He started his career with consecutive wins at Happy Valley before winning by 1.8 lengths at Sha Tin. His form is exemplary and punters are getting a generous line.

Barrier 13 doesn’t help but he has time to find cover.

3. The Irishman ($3.75) Bet @ Sportsbet

The former New Zealand runner has yet to win from three starts in Hong Kong but the rise in distance looks ideal.

He finished third behind Romantic Warrior last start and the son of Tavistock looks like a nice type in the making.

He has been well-backed at $3.75 and that’s a good sign.

4. Ima Single Man ($21) Bet @ Sportsbet

There is nothing wrong with the form of Ima Single Man, but we question if he’s good enough at this level.

He is a three-time winner at Sha Tin from 14 attempts and barrier two is ideal, but he’d be a better bet in something easier.

5. Senor Toba ($5.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

The former Australian, who finished second in the Queensland Derby, won his first Hong Kong race last time out at Sha Tin.

He won by a half-length over 2000m, so he drops back in distance and we don’t think that’ll do him any favours.

Betting suggests he’ll be tough to beat, but we’re prepared to include him in first four options only.

6. Fa Fa ($21) Bet @ Sportsbet

Fa Fa ended his run of five consecutive wins when finishing 12th behind Romantic Warrior and he’ll likely struggle again.

His winning form came at Happy Valley and it’s not stacking up at this level, so we can’t have him in our selections.

7. Turin Redsum ($13) Bet @ Sportsbet

The former European should appreciate the rise in distance and that has been factored into this odds.

He finished fourth behind Romantic Warrior as a $101 chance last start, so that exceeded expectations and the son of Dubawi shouldn’t be ruled out.

We can make room for him at the odds.

8. Rocket Spade (Best Roughie – $34) Bet @ Sportsbet

Rocket Spade showed ability in New Zealand and we’re keeping the faith with the son of Fastnet Rock.

He won four of his five starts in New Zealand before running eighth in the Australian Derby. That run might have flattened him a bit, but rising in distance helps.

The talent is there and we can’t turn down the odds.

9. Gorytus ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

Scored a two-length win at Happy Valley two back but he’d need to find a few lengths to win the Classic Cup.

The four-year-old is another runner wanting more ground, but we haven’t seen enough to include him in selections.

10. Money Catcher ($67) Bet @ Sportsbet

Better for two runs back from a spell but the former Kiwi wasn’t facing hard opposition last time out.

He finished second behind Rocket Spade in the Avondale Guineas before running eighth in the Derby. He needs to find a few lengths on those efforts.

11. Mr Ascendency ($26) Bet @ Sportsbet

That was a much better run for fourth at Sha Tin last start as a $151 chance, but this is a different kettle of fish.

Getting the inside draw helps but his form doesn’t stack up well enough for Group 1 level.

12. Hit the Shot ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

He showed ability in Australia when winning at Ballarat and placing in the Victoria Derby, but he has been awful since arriving in Hong Kong.

We’re not sure what’s gone wrong, but he’s struggling to beat runners home and the odds tell the story.

13. Intrepid Winner ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

Not running well enough to win this race and the odds are at triple-figures for a reason. Shouldn’t be threatening at any stage.

14. Nordic Sky ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

In the same boat as Intrepid Winner. He has yet to win or place from eight attempts, so he shouldn’t even be in the race.
